The survey was conducted among 686 youths ranging in age between 14 and 15. We visited 12 different schools all around Finland. In general the attitudes towards human rights were rather positive, although the acceptance of violence was quite common. 13 % of the respondents thought that precision missile attacks and surgical bombings harm civilians only rarely. However, there were equal amount of supporters and opponents of the claim that the nation has right to attack another nation when their military security is threatened.

41 % of the respondents thought that terrorists do not deserve to be treated like human beings. There were less youths who disagreed with this. There were also more supporters than opponents of a capital punishment. 48 % of the youths thought that the capital punishment is sometimes acceptable.

Most respondents thought that neighbourhoods should not be made up of people, who belong to a certain ethnic or religious group. 71 % of the respondents agreed with the claim that racism and ethnic intolerance are important human rights issues. Also other human rights violations were considered important. Girls. responses were in general more tolerant than boys. The youths who live in the countryside had more intolerant opinions than the ones who live in cities. The PeaceTest survey has been conducted in Finnish schools many times before, but the result from this year are not fully comparable with the previous years because of the differences between the samples.
